Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) belongs to the family Nymphaeaceae. It is a herbaceous perennial aquatic plant. It is also known as sacred lotus, East Indian lotus, Chinese lotus etc. The evidence sighted in Rigveda during 2000 - 1500 BC reveals that the lotus was used as food in India. Dravidian called it as Pundarika in sankrit.
Lotus lives in the mud pond but it is devoid of any mud on its stem, leaf or flower. The pond represents the worst conditions in our society and the lotus is the each individual who thrives in it. Thus the plant teaches us to live in worst conditions. It also represents divinity, youth, beauty, kindness, prosperity and fertility.
